Niue hopes new generator arrives tomorrow

7:09 am on 2 June 2006

The Niue government is expecting a new generator and the engineers to repair it will be on the island tomorrow.

It follows a destructive fire three nights ago which destroyed one of the two main diesel generators on the island, left houses without electricity and affected water supplies.

A New Zealand Defence Force, Hercules, just back from East Timor, is to carry the five tonne generator to the island as soon as it can be delivered and packed for the flight.

A specific time for departure is not yet available but the island's acting premier, Fisa Pihigia, says they hope it will arrive tomorrow.

He says people have been coping but the problems obtaining enough water are the biggest concern.

"Some of the villages are able to have water for a limited time while some are yet to have water - that is the main concern."
