Papua New Guinea's Lihir Gold Limited has become the first company in the country to be able to trade carbon credits under the Kyoto Protocol.

Under the protocol's clean development mechanism, the move will potentially add US$3 million annually to export revenues.

A company announcement said it had registered Lihir's geothermal plant under the scheme.

The National reports Lihir's chief executive Arthur Hood as saying the development was an environmental landmark for PNG.
