Fiji's president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, has opened the first session of the new parliament by challenging it to make the multi-party cabinet work.
Addressing a joint sitting of the House of Representatives and the Senate, President Iloilo said the multi-party cabinet has given Fiji a new start in bringing the country's ethnic and cultural communities together.
He said the people have welcomed the multi-party cabinet which has given Fiji a constitutional and political platform to move the country forward to prosperity.
President Iloilo said the multi-party cabinet has ushered in a new era of co-operation in cabinet and parliament and it is the national responsibility of all MPs and citizens to support it.
He also urged the MPs and the cabinet to urgently renew their effort to resolve the land issue which he said had been a major problem for far too long.
President Iloilo said the multi-party cabinet provides a means of discussion and negotiations that can lead to a quick settlement.
