Former MP in Samoa cleared of theft allegations

A Samoan former Member of Parliament has been cleared of allegations that he stole village money after a District court ruling yesterday.

Former MP Fuimaono Fa'asopo was charged with theft after several matais who were banished from his village of Salani had filed a complaint to police late last year.

Police say the matais had accused Fuimaono of stealing about 6 thousand US dollars from the village bank account some two years ago.

The court found that police did not have enough evidence to prove the charge.

The former MP in a separate court case has withdrawn his election petition against one woman MP in the main Opposition party.
