American Samoa faces US grant cuts

3:45 pm on 9 June 2006

The United States Department of Interior has reduced grant awards for American Samoa government operations for the reminder of the current fiscal year.

The total funding the territory's government was to receive for general operations of 11.7 million US dollars has been reduced by 316,000 dollars.

The cuts will affect American Samoa Community College, the Department of Education, LBJ Hospital operations and the High Court.

The hospital's pharmaceuticals and medical supplies grant of two million dollars is not affected.

The Director of the Office of Insular Affairs, Nikolao Pula, says the cuts are the result of across the board cuts enacted by Congress.
