Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, says he hopes it is not the aim of some people in the Labour Party to derail the multi-party cabinet.

Mr Qarase has told Radio Legend that utterances by Labour leader Mahendra Chaudhry and cabinet minister Lekh Ram Vyashnoi are not helping in the progress of the multi-party cabinet.

Mr Qarase says the whole of Fiji is looking forward to the success of the multi-party government.

He says he is determined to make it a success but this will need the cooperation of he Fiji Labour Party and he hopes there is no attempt to derail it.

On Mr Vyashnoi's comments, Mr Qarase says it is unusual for a cabinet minister to speak against the government and he will be reminding Mr Vyashnoi, who is new to cabinet, and all ministers of cabinet procedures.

Mr Vyashnoi had said earlier that the Labour Party will meet soon to set deadlines for what the multi-party government should achieve by the end of the year.

Mr Vyashnoi said Mr Chaudhry had highlighted these as a Code of Conduct Bill, anti-corruption legislation providing for an independent commission with investigative powers and removal of all racial discrimination from affirmative action programmes.
