Samoa's tourist earnings rise while exports drop

The latest report from Samoa's Central bank latest report has revealed a rise in tourism earnings but a drop in export.

Tourist earnings from the Australian market jumped 55 percent in April to about 2.5 million US dollars.

Earnings from New Zealand visitors has also more than doubled compared to April 2005 to about 2 million US dollars

European tourist revenue has also increased to 33 percent growth in expenditure, but tourist earnings from American Samoa dropped to 49 percent to about 1.5 million US dollars.

Despite the increase in revenues the bank says overall tourist arrivals was 13 percent higher than during the same period last year.

Meanwhile total earnings from Samoa's main exports dropped 20 percent to 700 US dollars in April reflecting sharp declines in revenues from nonu juice and coconut cream.
