New Caledonian union optimistic about port talks

3:34 pm on 22 June 2006

The New Caledonian USTKE union says it is confident the port dispute in Noumea will come to an end as negotiations have started.

The union is asking for a quota system for cargo being unloaded at the port in a bid to protect local companies from being forced out.

USTKE representative, Pierre Chauvat, says roundtable talks between the union, the government, a French expert from the ministry of transport and an MSC shipping company representative started yesterday.

Mr Chauvat says talks will end tomorrow and the union is optimistic that they will find a solution.

"We have to find a solution because otherwise the situation will remain socially as it is. So this has to come to an agreement in some hour."
