French Polynesian man arrested over televised port assault

1:14 pm on 23 June 2006

A French Polynesian man has been arrested two days after assaulting a senior official in the port of Papeete.

The arrest came amid a rebellion by members of the dissolved GIP intervention force who still refuse to accept the authority of the government.

The assault occurred in view of television cameras and followed an attempt by the official to get access to the port headquarters of the so-called administrative flotilla.

The assault has been condemned by most political parties except the main opposition which has accused the government of provoking those who keep defying it.

French police arrested the man who is in court today.
