American Samoa status discussions continue

5:19 pm on 23 June 2006

American Samoa's Congressman Faleomavaega Eni will address the territory's Bar Association tomorrow.

Faleomavaega's address will focus on the purpose of the Future Political Status Study Commission, its recent hearings, as well as a review of the various political status options available to American Samoa.

Faleomavaega says American Samoa is at a critical time and the commission's decision will drastically affect the future of the territory.

He says they must seek a positive and constructive dialogue on how to establish a more definitive and lasting political relationship with the United States.

Faleomavaega will also discuss with members of the association the current status of the American Samoa Constitution as well as the importance of the establishment of a Federal District Court in Pago Pago.

He says establishing a federal district court in American Samoa is essential to resolving the constitutional and jurisdictional uncertainties that have arisen in the territory.
