Review of monopoly of Solomons Telecom

2:33 pm on 3 July 2006

The Solomon Islands monopoly telecommunications service faces a government review of its status.

The Acting Minister of Finance, Gordon Darcy, says the government will first have to look at the exclusivity and legality of the licence for Solomons Telekom.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports Mr Darcy saying the government is keen to open the industry to competition.

The monopoly license was signed in 2003 but the minister says the World Trade Organisation, of which Solomon Islands is a member, states that telecommunications must have an open market.

However, Mr Darcy stresses that further action on this will be guided by the law.
