PNG Mining Minister threatens legal action over assassination plot claims

8:20 pm on 3 July 2006

Papua New Guinea's mining minister, Sam Akoitai, is considering a law suit against the Autonomous Bougainville Government over allegations he was involved in an assassination plot against the president.

Joseph Kabui's office says PNG intelligence discovered the plan and then some former militants came forward to admit their involvement and apologise.

Mr Kabui's office says the president has been told the person behind the plan was Sam Akoitai who represents central Bougainville in the national parliament.

It's alleged Mr Akoitai paid the plotters 7-thousand US dollars and gave them weapons.

The Post Courier newspaper is reporting that Mr Akoitai is demanding the government prove he was the one who was behind the assassination plot.

But President Kabui told the newsppaer the ABG has what he calls "very substantive" information and contacts to prove its case.
