Samoa's Electoral Commission hears public input on proposed Electoral Act changes

5:22 pm on 4 July 2006

Samoa's 2006 Electoral Commission has started hearing public opinions on proposed amendments to the Electoral Act.

Reliable sources say the government's intention is for the commission to investigate irregularities and problems from the last election.

The commission is reported to be keen to hear further public opinion so it can come up with ways to improve and avoid further election irregularities and mistakes.

It has already completed discussions on reports of a previous inquiry which came up with recommendations on possible amendments to the Act.

This should then give enough time for them to be debated in parliament, and put into law, before the next general election in 2011.
