Fiji's FLP leader says he will not change his leadership style

6:13 am on 8 July 2006

The Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, says he will not change his leadership style.

Mr Chaudhry was responding to criticisms by senior party members and cabinet ministers, Krishna Datt and Poseci Bune, calling for a more consultative and collegial type of decision making in the party.

Mr Datt had said that the time for the confrontational and aggressive approach was over and if the FLP failed to adapt, it would risk becoming extinct like the dinosaurs.

But Mr Chaudhry says his leadership style cannot be questioned because there is nothing wrong with the way he runs the party.

Mr Chaudhry says these members did not challenge his leadership when they took their positions in cabinet on his nomination, but made an issue of leadership when it came to senate nominations.

Mr Chaudhry says the people who voted Labour have not complained about his leadership style.

Radio Legend reports that he has also refused to give the reason for canceling a meeting with the prime minister to set ground rules for the multi-party cabinet to go to Hong Kong, saying he does not have to inform the public why he went.
