Fiji dairy industry doomed to collapse

Fiji's Senate has been told that the country's dairy industry is doomed to collapse unless lease renewals and ownership transfers are handled successfully.

The Daily Post reports the warning has been given by Senator Eminoni Ramacou, who says the leases for some original dairy farms have already expired and others are due to expire.

He says some of the farms which have changed hands are now idle and others are in decline, reminiscent of what had happened in the sugar industry.

Senator Ramacou says the local dairy industry is also threatened by imports of cheap milk from overseas which undermines the viability of local farms.
