Fiji military offers to resume peacekeeping duties in Lebanon

Fiji's military says it is ready to undertake peacekeeping duties in Lebanon again, but only if invited by the United Nations.

The military commander, Commodore Bainimarama, has told the Fiji Times any decision to send Fiji troops to Lebanon would be made by the ministry of home affairs and the government.

Over 12-thouamnd Fiji troops performed peacekeeping duties in Southern Lebanon over a 24-year period from 1978 to 2002 as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon

34 Fiji soldiers died in the operation with three losing their lives in a Hizbollah ambush within the first 12 months.

With violence escalating in Lebanon as Israel attacks Hizbollah bases, the United Nations has again sent officials to Beirut to negotiate a possible ceasefire and the British prime minister, Tony Blair, has called for an international peace keeping force.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese government has appealed for help from the international community.
