Former Solomons minister Taneko refuses to vacate government home

3:29 pm on 18 July 2006

The police minister in the previous Solomon Islands government, Augustine Taneko, is refusing to vacate his ministerial home and could be evicted.

The Solomon Star newspaper, quoting government sources, says the refusal to move has forced the minister for provincial government, Japhet Waipora and his family to be accommodated at a Honiara motel.

Mr Waipora has been entitled to a ministerial residence after becoming a cabinet minister in May.

But Mr Taneko told the newspaper that he did not refuse to leave the house but simply needs time to sort out everything and properly pack his things.

He says leaders deserve some respect and honour for the contributions they have made to the country.
