American Samoa is is cracking down on groups holding fundraisers by the roadside.

The Department of Public Safety has instructed police to crack down on groups holding car washes and begging for money by the roadside, after a surge in such fundraisers in the last few weeks.

The deputy commissioner, Mike Fuiava, says fundraising groups are putting their and the motorists' safety at risk by running onto the road to collect money.

He says such groups have contributed to collisions because vehicles suddenly stop to hand out a dollar without regard for vehicles that are following behind.
