The Fiji-based organisation, the Pacific Concerns Resource Centre has come out in support of the a call by the French Polynesian President, Oscar Temaru, for Pacific youths to discuss the right of the peoples to self-determination.

The speech at the Pacific Youth Festival in Tahiti prompted the French high commission delegates to walk out of the opening ceremony and was widely condemned by opposition parties, with one demanding fresh elections to fight independence.

But the PCRC's Director, Tupou Vere, has welcomed the call to encourage Pacific youths to take an interest in issues that matter to the region.

Ms Vere says the Pacific has the largest number of territories still being administered by colonial powers.

She says Pacific youths should take bold steps in life and not be intimidated by the might of the status quo.
