Draft youth charter drawn up at first Pacific Youth Festival in Tahiti

5:46 am on 24 July 2006

A draft Pacific Youth Charter has been drawn up on the conclusion of the first Pacific youth festival in French Polynesia.

The festival was an opportunity for 1,400 young people to share their views on how to address challenges facing them in the region.

Sara Vui-talitu reports.

"The Pacific youth charter will be drafted on comments made during the festival. The SPC and Pacific Forum have indicated their interest in the charter as a resource for youth development in the region, and it will be tabled at the next world youth festival in Mexico. The festival has been an opportunity to network and learn from other countries in the region, and is a way to nurture and motivate young people to be effective leaders. Many delegates have said they would probably never have come to Tahiti had it not been for financial sponsorship. given French Polynesia is an expensive location. Fiji can learn from this festival and improve on it, when it hosts the next Pacific youth festival in 2009."
