UNDP sees positive signs from Tonga's Civil Society Forum

7:51 pm on 26 July 2006

The United Nations Development Program has found the Civil Society Forum of Tonga has achieved encouraging results in its cooperation with the UNDP.

The Civil Society Forum has just been set up in Nuku'alofa.

The UNDP says members of the Forum have engaged more in dialogue with government on issues pertaining to the community and of common interest to the people.

The visiting Suva-based UNDP Regional Coordinator and Regional Representative, Richard Dictus, says they've seen a lot of dialogue between government and civil society, and between government and the private sector.

The organisation is trying to help non-government organisations improve their management.

Mr Dictus says it seems to be the right time for this kind of project in Tonga where he feels a lot more openness has emerged over the last months.
