Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce backs pay for performance

1:15 pm on 28 July 2006

The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed the recent announcement of pay rises for public servants and members of parliament.

Public servants and teachers in Solomon Islands have been awarded a six percent pay rise, while the salary of MPs and the Prime Minister is set to double.

The chamber's chairman Peter Goodwin says that the private sector is strongly in favour of pay for performance.

Mr Goodwin says that if one's job carries great responsibility then you should be paid accordingly, although your performance must meet a high level too.

He says that in return for the pay and conditions, politicians should expect to be closely scrutinised by the electorate.

There has been much public speculation recently about the performance of some public servants with calls for better work performance, professionalism and attendance in return for pay rises.

Mr Goodwin says it's ironic that some people had called for him to be deported earlier this year for making similar statements on behalf of the private sector.
