Fiji to focus on increasing bilateral trade arrangements

9:06 am on 28 July 2006

Following the breakdown in the Doha round of talks at the World Trade Organisation this week, Fiji will now focus on increasing bilateral trade arrangements with Asian countries.

The chief executive of the ministry of foreign affairs and external trade, Isikeli Mataitoga, has told Fiji TV the suspension of the trade talks means that WTO members will not be able to meet the 2006 deadline to complete negotiations.

But, he says, Fiji will continue to engage with the European Union because France and Germany will have a strong say in how the trade process finally shapes out.

Mr Mataitoga says Fiji will start with France when its foreign minister visits Suva next week.
