Tongan court fines Chinese women using fake Japanese passports

3:33 pm on 2 August 2006

Two Chinese women charged with using fraudulent Japanese passports in Tonga have each been fined 830 US dollars.

The Chief Police Magistrate, Samiu Palu, discharged the women's children.

In delivering his sentence this morning, Mr Palu says he did not believe that the women had come to Tonga for their children's schooling, but rather to transit via Tonga to the United States.

There is also a suspicion that the four are part of a human trafficking operation.

They have been ordered to remain in Tonga until they pay their fines, or face further arrest.
