Fiji Labour Party president Koroi asked to resign

6:30 pm on 3 August 2006

The deputy leader of the Fiji Labour Party, Poseci Bune, has called for the resignation of the party president, Jokapeci Koroi.

The call comes as the infighting between five senior members of the Labour Party and its leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, intensifies.

Radio Fiji quotes Mr Bune as saying that Mrs Koroi must go for the good of the party.

He says the Labour Party's problems will continue if Mrs Koroi does not call a management board meeting.

Mr Bune says such a meeting would resolve the problems the five dissenting members have with Mr Chaudhry, provided there is honest discussion.

He says Mrs Koroi should carry out her responsibilities but if she cannot, she should step down.

Labour Party vice president and multi-party cabinet minister, Krishna Datt, has backed Mr Bune's call
