Fiji's powerful Methodist Church has demanded that a complete ban be placed on a book by a former cabinet minister and Speaker of parliament, Sir Vijay R Singh.
Fiji TV reports that the Methodist Church is also calling on all Christian denominations to demand that the government ban the book.
" Speaking Out" contains Sir Vijay's thoughts on Fiji between 1995 and 2005, and makes reference to the pre-coup nationalist protest marches of 2000 against Mahendra Chaudhry as prime minister.
It asks how the marchers reconciled their disapproval of an ethnic Indian prime minister on the weekday with their purported devotion to the Biblical precept of the brotherhood of man on Sunday.
A Methodist Church spokesman, the Rev Iliesa Naivalu, says the fear of extinction in their own land brought the Fijian people together in the marches and Sir Vijay should understand that.
But an ageing and seriously ill Sir Vijay says he only has a few more months to live and he loves Fiji and the Fijian people.
He says people should read his book in totality.
"Speaking Out" will be launched by Fiji's vice president, Ratu Jone Madraiwiwi, at the USP next week.
