Police in French Polynesia seize drugs

6:08 pm on 10 August 2006

French police in Tahiti have revealed that last month they seized almost 400,000 US dollars worth of illegal drugs in a single haul at French Polynesia's international airport.

Customs officials made the disclosure only now, saying for the purpose of the investigation no information was released.

The Tahitipresse news agency says the package of methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, was discovered in the possession of a 21-year-old woman who arrived from Los Angeles on July the 13th.

The woman's mother was also arrested and it was established that both had carried drugs into the territory on previous trips.

The investigations have led to three more women, aged between 31 and 41, being detained for having been carriers of illegal drugs.
