8:03 am on 11 August 2006

Kiribati has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the University of the South Pacific for the construction of a new campus on the island nation.

The new campus will provide additional facilities for the growing numbers of i-Kiribati students, but plans also include the establishment of an Atoll Research Centre.

Under the arrangement, the Government of Kiribati will make available land for long term lease by USP and provide over 1 million US dollars for the first phase of the campus's construction.

1207 students from Kiribati studied at USP last year with 912 of these taking courses at the Kiribati Campus.
