Fiji police investigating senior officer on abuse of office allegations

10:18 am on 16 August 2006

A very senior officer of the Fiji police is reported to be under investigation on suspicion of helping to transport escaped prisoners.

The Fiji Sun reports that the officer is under investigation for abuse of office stemming from revelations by a man who was taken in for questioning about the suspected transport of prison escapees.

The deputy police commissioner, Moses Driver, has confirmed he is in charge of the investigation but said he could not reveal any further details.

Both Mr Driver and the police public relations officer, Sylvia Low, refused to confirm or deny that the officer under investigation is one of most senior in the force.

The Sun says when it contacted the officer under investigation yesterday, he directed all inquiries to the police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, who was not available for comment.

The senior officer remains on duty and would face suspension only if charges are laid.
