Marshalls to change school year terms

Marshall Islands public schools will soon shift to a school year that follows the system used in most islands in the South Pacific.

Education Secretary, Biram Stege, says a February-to-November school year will fit the needs of the Marshall Islands better than the United States system of school from August-to-May.

Educators have expressed concern for years that with the cultural and religious focus in the Marshall Islands centered on Christmas and New Year celebrations, much of the instruction time scheduled in the December- January period is wasted.

Exactly when the revised school year will be implemented is still under discussion.
