The growing influence of foreign countries like China, Japan, France and Taiwan in the Pacific region is making the United States take notice.

Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin says the visit by members of the House International Relations Committee has driven home the message that the US needs to bolster its presence in this part of the world.

"We need to pay a little more attention about what is happening here in the Pacific region, and I think this is a message I have been advocating for all these years."
