Thousands of Vodaphone Fiji's mobile phone customers have been bulk-billed six months worth of text messages at higher than normal rates.

The Fiji Times reports that Vodaphone claims a system failure saw no text message charges billed to post-pay customers since February.

Vodaphone Fiji's chief executive, Aslam Khan, says when the anomaly was discovered, human error caused post-pay customers to be overcharged.

The Consumer Council of Fiji has launched an investigation into the overcharging, saying customers should not be made to suffer because of Vodaphone Fiji's problems.

The report says up to 3,000 post pay customers may have been affected by the over-charging with the highest bill in the range of 1-thousand-200 US dollars.
