Samoa to consider providing land for the US military

Samoa has agreed to discuss allowing American Samoan troops to train on land in Savaii.

The issue was brought up at inter-Samoa talks last week.

But the Chief Executive of the Ministry of the Prime Minister , Auseuga'efa Poloma Komiti, says talks over the issue are likely to go on for some time:

"We have advised them that yes there is land available of the size that they asked for. When the time eventuates when we have thoroughly checked the pros and cons, then yes that shall be so."

American Samoa's Governor, Togiola Tulafono, says having a training site in Savaii would mean the military would no longer have to ship local soldiers to Hawaii and the US mainland to be trained.
