Papua New Guinea has commenced groundwork to get an electricity supply to new mine sites in the Highlands and Momase regions.

The Post Courier reports there are plans for the construction of three new power stations along the Ramu River to cater for the increase in demand.

This will be running within 25 months of commencing construction, and will be specifically built to supply the Hidden Valley Gold Mine in Morobe Province.

Currently the Ramu One Power Station is the only existing power station on the Ramu River supplying the Highlands centres, Lae and Madang
