Fiji police are investigating threats made by the new chairman of Ba Provincial Holdings that there would be bloodshed if the West Indian mobile phone company, Digicel, is given a licence to operate in Fiji.
Ratu Tevita Momoedonu made the threat in a letter to President Iloilo and asked him to tell the government to order the company out of Fiji within 24 hours.
The Fijilive website quotes the police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, as saying his officers are gathering intelligence to see whether the statement has any substance.
Mr Hughes says they are ready to take "appropriate action" should anyone step out of line.
He says Ratu Tevita would not necessarily be charged with inciting disorder but police would not condone such behaviour, especially if it should incite violence.
Mr Hughes says police are monitoring the situation in Ba and are ready to counter any violence.
