World trade unions may support opposition to Fiji Broadcasting Bill

The Fiji government has been warned that 200-million workers around the world could be mobilised against it unless it makes urgent changes to its draconian Broadcasting Licensing Bill.

Fiji TV reports that the warning has been issued by the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (IFCTU) which is the largest trade union umbrella body in the world.

The ICFTU's general secretary, Noruyuki Suzuki, says any move to regulate the broadcast media is tantamount to a breach of workers' rights.

He has advised their local affiliate, the Fiji Trades Union Congress, to begin local action to oppose the Bill which could result in a solidarity response from all around the world.

Mr Suzuki says he sincerely hopes the Fiji government looks at the seriousness of the issue.

The international media freedom organisation, Reporters Without Borders, and an organisation which campaigns for freedom of expression around the world, Article 19, have already attacked the Broadcasting Licensing Bill.

Both say it is a means of harassing and controlling independent or critical broadcasters.
