Fiji to get help for Canberra to run elections

Fiji's Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase. says Canberra has agreed to help Fiji improve the way it conducts elections.,

After returning from Australia yesterday, Mr Qarase said he had positive talks on the matter with his Australian counterpart John Howard during the visit

Fiji's municipal election office is to be merged with the State election office.

The Fiji Live site says Mr Qarase believes the office needs to be upgraded in capability well before the next general election in 2011.

The Prime Minister said that Australia has also agreed to send at least one expert to assist in setting up Fiji's sugar research institution
