1:47 pm on 11 September 2006

A split in the Fiji Labour Party's Lautoka branch has led to the win of the ruling SDL party's candidate in a by-election held in the western city at the weekend.

Two Labour candidates, Subhas Verma and Samuela Yalayala, both stood against each other under their party's banner as well as against Faiaz Ali of the SDL.

Only 560 of about 5,300 voters in the Waiyavi ward turned out to cast their votes.

Mr Ali won after he polled 203 votes while the remaining votes cast were split between the two Labour party candidates.
