The Fiji parliament has passed a bill to give tax exemptions to companies which sponsor next month's Melanesian Arts Festival in Suva.

All companies donating money for the running of the festival will be entitled to a 150% income tax rebate.

The Melanesia Arts Festival will be staged in Suva early next month with Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji taking part.

The Bill also provides for a 200% tax rebate for companies which sponsor next year's World Netball Championships to be hosted by Fiji at the new Sports City in Suva.

Fiji's finance minister, Ratu Jone Kubuabola, says the strategy is aimed at ensuring the success of the two international events.
