New attorney general in Solomon Islands draws criticism

5:47 am on 22 September 2006

The appointment of Julian Moti as the new Solomon Islands attorney general has drawn criticism.

The leader of the opposition in Solomon Islands has described the appointment shocking.

Fred Fono says he condemns the decision, and his Opposition group will meet today and make its official position known.

And Honiara Lawyer and a member of Solomon Islands Bar Association, Andrew Radcliff says he is surprised at the attitude of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission in appointing Mr Moti.

Mr Radcliff he says he does not know why the Commission did not look at the list of reasons the Association had put in to oppose Mr Moti's appointment.

Mr Radcliffe says Mr Moti is not a suitable candidate in light of his past records, both here and in Vanuatu.

In 2001, he was banned from the Solomon Islands for interfering in domestic politics.

The ban was lifted after Mr Sogavare came to power in May.

In 1997, Mr Moti beat charges of raping a 13-year-old girl in Vanuatu but later settled a civil action taken against him by her family.

The president of the Bar Association, Ranjit Hewagama, says the legal services commission has made its decision.
