PNG considers getting Cuban doctors

4:19 pm on 22 September 2006

Papua New Guinea's Secretary of Health says PNG is considering getting doctors from Cuba to fill a doctor shortages.

Dr Nicholas Mann says Cuba's Minister of Health invited PNG's Minister of Health, Sir Peter Barter, to visit and assess Cuba's health sector.

He says Sir Peter has gone on a fact-finding mission to Cuba.

"Now there is this talk about getting doctors and so on but of course one has to be mindful of the fact of standards, training registration and so on that our system is based on Commonwealth medical training and we don't know the kind of training system that Cuban doctors are trained under."

Dr Nicholas Mann says PNG currently has volunteer doctors from China, who return to China at the end of the year.
