Cook Islands election voting under way today

Voters in the Cook Islands are going to the polls today to elect a new government

About 10,000 eligible voters are expected to vote for the 23 seats with one already decided.

Alma MaUa reports from Rarotonga....

"The Penryhn seat has already been won by the Democratic Party after the island opted to field one candidate. There are 23 electorates to be decided with ten on the main island of Rarotonga and thirteen on the outer islands. The largest electorate, on Rarotonga, has 976 voters, and the smallest is the Tamarua electorate with just 65. The polls close at 6 pm and the Electoral office expects the first results about two hours later."
