Papua New Guinea's Civil Aviation minister says the introduction of an air link beween Port Moresby and Indonesia's Papua province will help improve overall air services for his people.

Don Polye has given the go-ahead for Papua province regional airline Airefata to negotiate with a PNG partner to reactivate the service.

Air Niugini originally provided the service between Jayapura and Wewak but abandoned it in the 1990s.

Mr Polye says the new link between Biak and Moresby provides a new range of options for the public.

He says globalisation demands that PNG open up to competition in the international market.

"And also with the major focus to provide better service and quality service to our people at an affordable price and the introduction of flight services between Biak and Port Moresby by Airefata will probably see that kind of competition and the improvement of services provided."
