No damage from strong earthquake near Samoa

A strong earthquake measuring seven on the Richter scale struck near Samoa early last night.

The quake, which was centred 290 kilometres southwest of American Samoa, hit just before seven o'clock.

It triggered a small tsunami, with an eight centimetre wave recorded on the coast of Pago Pago in American Samoa, and in Nuie.

There have been no reports of damage.
