Samoa's new opposition leader calls first caucus meeting

10:33 am on 29 September 2006

The new leader of the opposition Samoa Democratic United Party, Asiata Sale'imoa Va'ai, will call his first caucus meeting today to discuss future plans and political challenges.

Asiata's plan comes a day after the former opposition leader, Le Mamea Ropati, stepped down and resigned from the party caucus.

The new leader has yet to confirm whether the three MPs who were loyal to Le Mamea are still supporting him.

Asiata says the former leader has finally accepted what the majority of caucus members had wanted.

He also says the matter should have been resolved a long time ago and without friction.
