Papua New Guinea police have arrested the Solomon Islands attorney general, Julian Moti, on alleged child sex offences.

The arrest was announced by the Australian minister for justice and customs, Chris Ellison.

Mr Moti, who is an Australian citizen, was arrested on a request by Australia which will now seek his extradition.

Mr Ellison says the Australian government has welcomed PNG's assistance in apprehending Mr Moti.

Mr Moti was appointed as the new attorney-general last week despite concern about his suitability.
