The Assembly of Christian Churches in Fiji (ACCF) has formally asked for changes to the Bill of Rights in the Constitution which bars discrimination against gays and lesbians.
The Fiji Times reports that the group has written to the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, complaining about the sexual orientation provision of the Constitution which it says condones "immoral" sexual behaviour.
The group claims this provision of the Constitution would give rise to all sorts of immoral practices like same sex marriages and the ordination of gay priests because of the rights protected under the constitution.
It says "the consequences of not removing such evil laws can only be devastating to Fiji as a nation."
The reaction from the Assembly of Christian Churches comes after reports that two New Zealanders are developing and marketing a resort exclusively for gays and lesbians in the Yasawa Group.
A spokesman for the Assembly, Sani Matalomani, says while they are deeply disturbed by this report, they want to get to the root of the problem which is the Constitution.
