Fiji Methodists gear up for anti-gay march

2:07 pm on 3 October 2006

Fiji's powerful Methodist Church is considering staging another protest march after the discovery that a gay and lesbian resort is already operating in the country.

The Fiji Sun reports that the resort is located at Pacific Harbour 50 kilometres west of Suva and is operated by gays for gays and lesbians.

The Methodist Church's assistant general secretary, the Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu, says their management committee will meet tomorrow to highlight the matter to its members.

He says as they did to protest the movie, The Da Vinci Code, they may have to hold a protest march so that gay and lesbian activities are not encouraged or promoted.

The Reverend Waqairatu says investors often underestimate society and mislead locals when presenting investment proposals

He says investors should be transparent and involve and consult locals in their projects.

But the Reverend Waqairatu adds that sometimes locals can be bribed or their ignorance can be exploited.
