Growing concern over suicides on Samoa's Savaii Island

2:51 pm on 4 October 2006

Twelve people have taken their own lives on Samoa's Savai'i Island so far this year, including three in the past three weeks.

The police superintendent in-charge of the Tuasivi sub-station, Pagamalie Penani, says the latest victim was a woman who died last Friday, after another woman died early last week.

He says another young mother had died in the previous week.

The police superintendent has repeated calls for the community on Savai'i to work together to bring the suicide rate down.
