Solomons PM dispels claim of Moti sacking

4:24 pm on 4 October 2006

The Solomon Islands prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, says Julian Moti remains the country's attorney general.

There have been reports that the Solomons Judicial and Legal Service Commission had revoked the appointment.

But Mr Sogavare says the Commission only acts on advice from his office and Mr Moti has not lost his position.

Mr Moti is believed to be holed up in the Solomon Islands High Commission in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, after evading PNG police who are seeking to take him into custody to await extradition proceedings.

The Australian government is seeking Mr Moti's extradition to face alleged child sex offences involving a 13-year-old girl in Vanuatu in 1997.

A Vanuatu court of appeal closed the case.

It's not known when Australia decided to investigate Mr Moti.
